Selank

Selank is a synthetic seven-amino-acid peptide registered as an anti-anxiety drug in Russia, not approved in the US, and tested only in small Russian trials.

US regulatory status

Not approved for human use in the US

Selank is not approved by the FDA for any use. It is registered as an anxiolytic in Russia. In April 2026 the FDA moved selank acetate off its Category 2 safety-risk list after the nomination was withdrawn, without adding it to Category 1, and it has not been scheduled for advisory committee review.

What the research shows

Evidence grade

Limited human evidence

Some studies in people, but they are small, short, early-phase or uncontrolled.

Selank is a lab-made peptide of seven amino acids (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) that researchers describe as having “prolonged anti-anxiety and nootropic effects.” How it might work is still a hypothesis: brain-membrane binding studies suggest it may adjust how GABA receptors respond. The published human trials are small, between 60 and 70 patients each, all from Russian groups and published in Russian with only English abstracts. They compared selank with benzodiazepines (medazepam or phenazepam) rather than with a placebo, and the abstracts give few details on randomization, blinding or effect sizes. A ClinicalTrials.gov search on October 16, 2026 found no registered selank trials.

How we grade evidence
  1. Strong human evidence

Consistent results from large randomized controlled trials in people.

  2. Limited human evidence · this page

Some studies in people, but they are small, short, early-phase or uncontrolled.

  3. Mixed evidence

Studies in people disagree, or strong evidence for one use sits beside weak evidence for another.

  4. Animal or lab studies only

Studied in cells or animals, not properly in people. Animal results may not apply to humans.

The grade describes how much research exists and in whom. It is not a judgment that a compound works or is safe.

Side effects and safety

The FDA says compounded drugs containing selank acetate “may pose risk for immunogenicity for certain routes of administration due to the potential for aggregation and peptide-related impurities,” and that it “lacks important information regarding any safety issues raised by selank acetate administered to humans.” Selank sold online is unregulated: Belgian regulators’ lab found it in seized “suspicious preparations” in 2017 and 2018 and called these research peptides “potentially dangerous molecules,” so the identity, purity and sterility of a product are not verified.

Questions people ask

What is selank?

Selank is a synthetic peptide of seven amino acids: threonine, lysine, proline, arginine, proline, glycine and proline. It was developed in Russia, where a 2022 review lists it among 14 peptide products registered there, in the “anxiolytic” (anti-anxiety) group. Researchers report anti-anxiety and nootropic (thinking-related) effects, and lab work suggests it may act on GABA receptors, but that mechanism is still a hypothesis.

Is selank FDA-approved?

No. Selank is not approved by the FDA for any use, and it is not in Category 1, 2 or 3 of the FDA’s May 14, 2026 list of substances nominated for pharmacy compounding. Selank acetate was on the FDA’s Category 2 safety-risk list until the nomination was withdrawn. Unlike semax and DSIP, it was not on the agenda of the FDA’s July 2026 compounding advisory committee, and no FDA briefing document exists for it.

Does selank work for anxiety?

The evidence is thin. In a 2008 Russian study of 62 people with generalized anxiety disorder or neurasthenia, 30 took selank and 32 took the benzodiazepine medazepam; the authors reported that the anti-anxiety effects were similar, but “selank had also antiasthenic and psychostimulant effects” (less fatigue, more alertness). A 2014 study of 60 people compared selank with phenazepam, and a 2015 trial gave 30 people phenazepam alone and 40 people selank plus phenazepam, reporting that the combination reduced some side effects of phenazepam. None of these compared selank with a placebo, all are published in Russian, and none is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov.

What is the difference between selank and semax?

Both are seven-amino-acid peptides developed in Russia, but they are different molecules with different registered uses there. Selank (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) is listed as an anxiolytic. [Semax](/compounds/semax) (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) is an analog of a fragment of the hormone ACTH and is listed as a nootropic. Neither is FDA-approved. The FDA reviewed semax for its July 2026 advisory committee; it has not reviewed selank.

Is selank a nasal spray or an injection?

Products sold online come in both forms. A 2020 report from Belgian regulators’ lab found that selank and semax are “freely available either as lyophilized powder for injection purposes or are present in nasal sprays,” after finding them in seized preparations. These products are not approved or tested by the FDA, so what is actually in a vial or spray is not verified.

How do I reconstitute selank?

There is no single correct amount. The water only sets the concentration: mg in the vial ÷ mL of water = mg per mL. For example (numbers for illustration only, not a dose), 10 mg of selank in 1 mL makes 10 mg/mL, so each unit on a U-100 insulin syringe holds 0.1 mg (100 mcg). The same vial in 2 mL makes 5 mg/mL, or 0.05 mg (50 mcg) per unit. More water means each unit holds less; less water means each unit holds more. The reconstitution calculator does this arithmetic for your vial. There is no FDA review or label for selank, so no verified source reports how well it dissolves or how long it keeps once mixed; see how long reconstituted peptides last. Because this product is not FDA-approved, no official label sets a water volume, and the contents of unapproved vials are not verified. Talk to a licensed prescriber or pharmacist before using any unapproved product.
