How long does Ozempic stay in your system?
About 5 weeks after the last dose, says the Ozempic label. What the Ozempic, Wegovy and semaglutide tablet labels say, and what that does and doesn’t mean.
About 5 weeks after your last dose: the Ozempic label says that “with an elimination half-life of approximately 1 week, semaglutide will be present in the circulation for about 5 weeks after the last dose.” The Wegovy label says about 5 to 7 weeks after its higher doses, and the Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets label says about five weeks after the last tablet.
Every product here is semaglutide, so the same half-life applies whether you inject it weekly or take a tablet daily. How long it lingers doesn’t change what to do about a late dose; for that, see missed GLP-1 doses.
What each label says
| Product | Half-life | Present in the circulation after the last dose | Before a planned pregnancy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ozempic injection | About 1 week | “About 5 weeks after the last dose” | Stop “at least 2 months before,” “due to the long washout period” |
| Wegovy injection and tablets | About 1 week | “About 5 to 7 weeks after the last injectable dose of 2.4 mg or 7.2 mg or oral dose of 25 mg” | Stop “at least 2 months before,” “to account for the long half-life” |
| Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets | About 1 week | “About five weeks after the last semaglutide tablet dose” | Stop “at least 2 months before,” “due to the long washout period” |

The Wegovy label explains why it lasts: semaglutide is “extensively bound to plasma albumin (greater than 99%),” and the body clears it by breaking it down, through “proteolytic cleavage of the peptide backbone and sequential beta-oxidation of the fatty acid sidechain” (section 12.3).
What the long half-life shows up in
- Planning a pregnancy. All three labels say to stop semaglutide at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy, longer than the 5 to 7 weeks the labels say it stays in the blood. For people taking Wegovy for weight or cardiovascular risk, the label also says to stop “when pregnancy is recognized” (Wegovy label, highlights, section 8). Plan this with your prescriber.
- Taking too much. The Ozempic label says treating an overdose means “taking into account the long half-life of OZEMPIC of approximately 1 week” (Ozempic label, section 10). The FDA’s 2024 alert on compounded semaglutide says the same about dosing errors: “A prolonged period of observation and treatment for overdose symptoms may be necessary due to the long half-life of semaglutide of about one week” (FDA).
- Starting tablets. It works the other way too: the tablets label says steady-state exposure “was achieved following 4 to 5 weeks” of daily tablets (tablets label, section 12.3).
What it doesn’t mean
- It isn’t a guide to stopping or spacing doses. The 5-week figure describes drug in the blood after a last dose. It isn’t a reason to skip, stretch or stop doses; your prescriber sets those.
- It isn’t the missed-dose window. Ozempic injection has its own rule (take it within 5 days, otherwise skip it), and the tablets have another (skip it, take the next one the next day). Both are in the missed-dose guide.
- It doesn’t say how long you’ll feel it. The labels describe how long semaglutide is in the circulation; they don’t give a timeline for when effects on blood sugar, appetite or side effects end after the last dose.
Questions people ask
How long does Ozempic stay in your system after you stop?
The Ozempic label says semaglutide “will be present in the circulation for about 5 weeks after the last dose.” The tablets label gives the same five weeks; the Wegovy label says about 5 to 7 weeks after its 2.4 mg or 7.2 mg injection or 25 mg tablet.
What is the half-life of Ozempic?
About 1 week, per the Ozempic label, and the same for Wegovy, Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets, since all are semaglutide. More on the medicine itself is on the semaglutide page.
How long before trying to get pregnant should you stop Ozempic?
The Ozempic label says to stop “at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy due to the long washout period for semaglutide.” The Wegovy and tablets labels say the same 2 months. Talk to your prescriber before you stop, so they can plan your diabetes or weight care in the meantime.
Do the tablets leave your system faster than the injection?
The labels don’t say so. Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets have the same half-life of about 1 week and stay in the circulation about five weeks after the last tablet, the same as the Ozempic injection after its last dose.
