Quick answers

How many units is 1 mg of semaglutide?

The answer changes with your vial’s mg/mL. See semaglutide in U-100 units at example strengths, a worked example, and how Ozempic and Wegovy labels measure it.

1 mg of semaglutide is a different number of units on every vial, because the reading depends on how concentrated the liquid is: on a U-100 syringe, units = mg ÷ (mg/mL) × 100. Check the mg/mL on your vial or pharmacy label and find it below, or let the semaglutide units calculator do the math for your vial and syringe.

Branded semaglutide never asks you to count units. Ozempic has a pen that only gives 1 mg doses, and Wegovy’s 1 mg pen and syringe are prefilled with a single dose.

1 mg in units at example strengths

The strengths below are what a 5 mg or 10 mg vial makes with 1, 2 or 2.5 mL of water, the same examples used on the semaglutide 5 mg and semaglutide 10 mg pages. They illustrate the math; they don’t describe your vial.

1 mg at different strengthsArithmetic
How many mL and U-100 units 1 mg is at each strength.
StrengthVolumeUnits (U-100)
2 mg/mL0.5 mL50 units
2.5 mg/mL0.4 mL40 units
4 mg/mL0.25 mL25 units
5 mg/mL0.2 mL20 units
10 mg/mL0.1 mL10 units

The same amount is a different number of units at each strength, so check the mg/mL on your vial or pharmacy label. U-100 syringe: 100 units = 1 mL.

At the lower strengths, 1 mg is more than a 30-unit syringe holds, so check that your reading fits the syringe you were given. If it doesn’t, ask your pharmacist rather than splitting the draw yourself.

Here is the full working for one example vial, a 10 mg vial mixed with 2.5 mL. Swap in your own numbers in the calculator.

10 mg vial + 2.5 mL, 1 mgWorked example
  1. 1Strength once mixed10 mg ÷ 2.5 mL = 4 mg/mL
  2. 2Volume for this amount1 mg ÷ 4 mg/mL = 0.25 mL
  3. 3In syringe units0.25 mL × 100 = 25 units

On a 100-unit syringe the nearest mark is 26 units. An example of the arithmetic, not a dose. Use your own vial, water and the dose your prescriber gave you in the calculator.

Where 1 mg sits on the labels

  • Ozempic: 1 mg is one of three maintenance options. “If additional glycemic control is needed after at least 4 weeks on the: 0.5 mg dosage, the dosage may be increased to 1 mg once weekly.” For type 2 diabetes with chronic kidney disease, the label says to “Increase the dosage to the maintenance dosage, 1 mg once weekly, after at least 4 weeks on the 0.5 mg dosage.” The FLOW kidney trial in the label compared Ozempic 1 mg with placebo in 3,533 adults (Ozempic label).
  • Wegovy: 1 mg is a “Dosage Escalation” step for weeks 9 through 12 of Table 1, after 0.5 mg and before 1.7 mg. Wegovy’s maintenance doses are higher: 1.7 mg, 2.4 mg or, for weight reduction in adults, up to 7.2 mg (Wegovy label).

So the same 1 mg is a long-term dose on one label and a four-week step on the other. These are quoted label facts, not guidance for you; follow your prescriber.

How the branded products give 1 mg

ProductLabel presentationWhat the label says
Ozempic 1 mg pen4 mg/3 mL (1.34 mg/mL), 4 doses“you can only select doses of 1 mg”
Ozempic single-dose prefilled syringe1 mg per 0.5 mLOne dose per syringe
Wegovy single-dose pen1 mg/0.5 mL“The dose of WEGOVY is already set on your pen”
Wegovy single-dose syringe1 mg/0.5 mLOne dose, integrated needle

The smaller Ozempic pen can’t reach 1 mg: on it, “Only doses of 0.25 mg or 0.5 mg can be selected with the dose selector.” A change to 1 mg means a different pen or syringe, not more clicks (Ozempic label).

Questions people ask

How many units of Ozempic is 1 mg?

Ozempic isn’t dosed in units. The 1 mg pen holds 4 mg in 3 mL and gives four 1 mg doses; you turn the selector until the counter shows 1 mg. The label says “Do not set the dose by counting the number of clicks you hear” (Ozempic label).

How many units of semaglutide is 1 mg?

For compounded semaglutide in a vial, it’s the row for your vial’s mg/mL in the table above. Check the active ingredient on the label too: the FDA says salt forms such as “semaglutide sodium and semaglutide acetate, are different active ingredients than are used in the approved drugs,” and it is “not aware of any lawful basis for their use in compounding” (FDA). See semaglutide’s regulatory status.

How many units of Wegovy is 1 mg?

None. Wegovy’s 1 mg comes as a single-dose pen or syringe holding 1 mg in 0.5 mL, each for one injection. The multi-dose FlexTouch pen only gives 2.4 mg doses (Wegovy label).

Is 1 mg of Ozempic the same amount as 1 mg of compounded semaglutide?

The mg figure is the same, but the products aren’t. Compounded semaglutide isn’t FDA-approved, and the FDA had received 990 adverse event reports linked to it as of May 31, 2026, noting they are likely underreported (FDA). Never convert an Ozempic dose into units for a vial yourself; the concentrations differ, so the pen’s numbers don’t carry over.
